Sleep is when your body does its repair work — tissue healing, hormone regulation, memory consolidation. It’s also the first thing pain steals. These six changes are the ones we see actually move the needle for our patients.
1. Fix your sleep position before your mattress
Side sleeping with a pillow that keeps your neck level (not tilted) and a pillow between the knees keeps the spine close to neutral. Back sleeping works with a modest pillow and one under the knees. Stomach sleeping forces your neck into hours of rotation — if that’s you and you wake stiff, this is the first experiment to run.
2. Give your brain a runway
Screens late at night work against you twice: the light suppresses melatonin, and the content keeps your stress system engaged. A 30–60 minute wind-down — dim lights, no feeds, something genuinely boring — is the cheapest sleep aid that exists.
3. Keep a consistent wake time
Your body clock anchors to when you wake, not when you sleep. A consistent wake time — weekends included, painful as that sounds — stabilizes the whole cycle more than any supplement.
4. Move during the day
Bodies that move sleep better. Regular activity deepens sleep — just keep intense exercise a few hours clear of bedtime so your system has time to downshift.
5. Mind the caffeine math
Caffeine’s half-life is around five to six hours — the 3 PM coffee is still partly on duty at 9 PM. If sleep is a struggle, pull your caffeine cutoff back to early afternoon for two weeks and judge the results.
6. Treat the pain that’s treating you badly
If pain wakes you, dictates your position, or greets you every morning, no sleep-hygiene list fixes that — the pain is the sleep problem. Morning stiffness that eases with movement, position-dependent pain, and nighttime tingling all point to mechanical problems that respond to actual care. That’s a back, neck, or joint evaluation, not another pillow purchase.
Sleep and recovery feed each other in both directions — it’s why sleep quality is part of how we think about every care plan at TRUForm.
