7 things to do after a car accident (from a Dallas chiropractor)

The most dangerous thing about a car accident is often what happens after it: adrenaline masks pain, "I feel fine" becomes the official story, and an injury that needed early care quietly sets in. After years of treating auto injuries in Dallas, here’s the advice we give our own families.

1. Don’t trust how you feel on day one

Adrenaline and inflammation run on different clocks. It’s completely common for whiplash symptoms — neck stiffness, headaches at the base of the skull, shoulder pain, dizziness — to appear 24 to 72 hours after the collision, sometimes later. “I walked away fine” and “I was injured” are frequently both true.

2. Get evaluated even for “minor” collisions

Injury doesn’t scale neatly with vehicle damage. Low-speed collisions can still whip the head and neck through a violent range of motion — the bumper is designed to absorb impact; your spine isn’t. An early exam establishes a baseline, catches problems while they’re most treatable, and documents your condition properly.

3. Document everything, starting now

  • Photos of vehicles, the scene, and any visible injuries
  • The other driver’s information and the police report number
  • A simple daily note of your symptoms — what hurts, when, and how much

If you end up needing an injury claim, this record is gold. Our auto injury care includes the clinical documentation side — thorough exam findings and treatment records — throughout your recovery.

4. Watch for the quiet symptoms

Everyone expects neck pain. Fewer people connect headaches, brain fog, fatigue, jaw discomfort, tingling into the arms, or trouble sleeping to the crash. These are worth mentioning at your evaluation — they often trace back to the same injury pattern. See our whiplash guide for the full picture.

5. Rest briefly — then move

A day or two of taking it easy makes sense. Weeks of immobility usually backfire: tissues heal tight, joints stiffen, and the guarded pattern becomes the new normal. Early, appropriate movement — guided by an exam, not guesswork — is one of the best predictors of a full recovery.

6. Don’t sign away a claim before you know your status

Insurance settlements are final. Accepting one before late-appearing symptoms have had time to show up — and before a proper evaluation — is a decision many people regret. We’re care providers, not lawyers, but we’ve seen this one enough times to say it plainly: know your injury status first.

7. Choose recovery, not just relief

Masking pain and fixing the injury are different goals. A recovery-focused plan restores motion, calms irritated tissue, and then rebuilds the strength and control that keep the problem from becoming chronic — which is exactly how we structure auto injury care at TRUForm.
